U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of about 130 Sorelle brand “Prescott” cribs due to entrapment, suffocation and fall hazards. These cribs have been responsible for the death of one child and 29 additional incidents of child injuries. Manufacturers of these kinds of dangerous products should be held liable for injuries they cause to infants. Sorelle Prescott and Simplicity Cribs Recalled Due to Child Injuries
These are full-sized fixed-sided cribs sold in an oak finish, as 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 convertible cribs. “Sorelle Furniture” along with the company’s address, the crib’s model number and a manufacturer’s code are printed on a label attached to the headboard or footboard.
But this is not the first time this product has been recalled. The Prescott cribs are actually just re-labeled Simplicity cribs that were recalled in April 2010 after the death of one child was reported. One consumer has even reported pealing the Prescott label off from the crib to find the Simplicity label still underneath. The cribs contain tubular metal mattress-support frames that can bend or detach, causing part of the mattress to drop, creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged, entrapped or fall out of the crib.
All Simplicity cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames regardless of model number are still being recalled. The recalled cribs were sold at Walmart, Target, Babies R Us and other stores nationwide for between $150 and $300. But it is unknown how many of the cribs were actually sold.
Simplicity cribs were first recalled after a one-year-old child from Attleboro, Massachusetts suffocated when he became entrapped between the crib mattress and the crib frame. An additional 29 incidents have been reported involving the Simplicity cribs where the cribs collapsed due to the metal mattress support frame detaching or bending.
The manufacturer of the cribs, Simplicity Inc., is no longer in business but the retailer of the Prescott crib, Albee Baby, is attempting to contact those who bought the crib from their store in New Jersey or bought the crib online from July 2009 through October 2009. Those who bought the Simplicity crib from a nationwide retailer can contact the store where the crib was purchased to receive a refund, replacement crib or store credit.
Consumers are being warned to immediately stop using the recalled cribs. You can also report the product to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, as well as any injury the defective product might have caused you.
