Drop-Side Cribs Sold at JC Penney Recalled Due to Entrapment, Suffocation Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall on March 26, of PT Domusindo Perdana drop-side cribs due to the potential for the products to malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, posing a risk of entrapment and suffocation for children. According to the CPSC, part of the cribs’ drop side may fall out of position during use, creating a space into which a child can roll and become wedged or entrapped, leading to a risk of suffocation or strangulation. In some cases, children may also fall out of the defective cribs. Drop-Side Cribs Affected by Recall

Approximately 73,000 drop-side cribs manufactured in Indonesia by PT Domusindo Perdana are affected by the recent product recall, all of which were sold at JCPenney.com and in the JC Penney catalog from January 1998 to December 2008, for between $200 and $400. The crib recall includes 14 models of the wooden drop-side cribs, which carry the following model numbers, names and date code:

Although no injuries have been reported yet in connection to the recalled drop-side cribs, the CPSC and the recalling firm are aware of three incidents involving drop-side rails that malfunctioned or detached. Consumers in possession of a PT Domusindo Perdana drop-side crib are advised to immediately stop using the potentially dangerous product and use a free immobilizer kit to immobilize the drop side of the crib. Unfortunately, these kits will not be available until May 2013; in the meantime, parents and caregivers are encouraged to find an alternate, safe sleep environment for their child, such as a play yard, bassinet or toddler bed, depending on the child’s age.
