3M Earplugs Causing Hearing Loss
In recent months, thousands of United States military veterans are filing lawsuits against 3M, the popular manufacturer of dual-ended combat arms earplugs. According to the claims, the government-contracted earplug manufacturing company had a design flaw that affected how the earplugs fit in the ear canal. Because of this defect, soldiers were not protected from dangerous levels of noise that occurred during various training and combat missions. The defective earplugs were sold to the military from 2003 to 2015, so if you served in the Marine Corps, Army, National Guard, or Reserves during this time frame and have experienced hearing loss or other ear related problems, you may be able to file a lawsuit.
What You Should Know About Defective 3M Arms Earplugs
These double-ended earplugs were designed and manufactured with the intention of allowing those in the military to choose either side of the earplug to use, based on the situation. One side is ideal for noises such as indoor range shooting whereas the other side helps reduce the noise of hunting, tactical ops, and outdoor range shooting. According to court documents, the design defect is that the earplug is not long enough to fit snugly into the ear canal. Because of this flaw, the earplugs easily loosened and made their way out of the ear, putting the military service member at risk.
Many of the veterans filing suit right now have experienced tinnitus and mild to severe hearing loss. 3M allegedly knew about the defect and provided them to the military anyway. After the U.S. government learned of this, they settled with 3M for $9.1 million dollars.
